KAREN ZANES

Saturday April 1st
2 - 4pm
Arabica on Commercial

Karen Zanes is a singer, songwriter and guitarist from the Boston/Cambridge area. In addition to her solo project, she is a contributing member of the experimental / noise/ psych / electronica project, Violet Nox. Other affiliated projects include The Freeways, Ghost Machine Noise, Second Day Venom.

She has been described as having a detached vocal style which is conducive to deep reverb and echoes.

Blending elements of psychedlia and folk - Zanes utilizes various
acoustic and electric guitars and tunings, slides, small percussion instruments, loops and tanpura drones to create sparse, sometimes cinematic soundscapes.

Radio Flyer (7 tracks) is Karen's first solo release (Moon and Stars Records)..."Utterly entrancing mind-manifesting music right from the get-go from Zanes, a founding member of the Freeways. Unlike many third-wave psychedelia projects, this is composed more of modest snippets than of grandiose, sprawling manifestos, and is all the better for it. You might close your eyes and almost imagine the second coming of Galaxie 500. “Lover Boy” is ethereal and haunting and the title track doesn’t even need the echo to make its ambiently melancholy point." -Francis DiMenno (The Noise; Silver Circle Reviews)

THE COFFEE MAN FILM SCREENING

Thursday September 29th
7pm
Arabica on Commercial

We're very happy to present The Coffee Man, a film about a man passionate about making great coffee, starting from the farm and finishing at the brew.

‘The Coffee Man’ explores the extraordinary world of specialty coffee and the lengths one man will go for ‘coffee nirvana’. The journey takes the viewer from the farm to cup, to the dizzying heights of international competition, where Sasa will win at any cost, even if that requires ‘smuggling’ Australian milk through US customs to attain the perfect flavor profile.

Sasa, a former immigrant from war-torn Bosnia found international acclaim of a different kind when he first moved to Australia in 1996, by representing his new country at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Meeting heroes such as Cathy Freeman gave Sasa a taste a victory that would live with him until 15 years later, when he outclassed competitors from almost 52 countries to win 2015 World Barista Championship (WBC) title in Seattle - the ‘Olympics’ of coffee.

This event is free, but we will be taking donations for Rwanda Bean Company, a local coffee importer that gives 50% of its profits to the farmers, in honor of the films focus on the entire coffee process.

ROB BYRD

Saturday, September 24th
2-4pm
Arabica On Commercial

Rob Byrd’s music explores the guitar’s capacity for melodic expression, and its ability to conjure spaces and textures. Melding sublime songwriting with expansive sonic settings, he calls forth shadowy vistas and veiled memories. He creates his music and all of its atmospheres by playing guitar in real time through his original sound design programs. There are no overdubs, backing tracks, looping, or additional instrumentation used.

Summoning alluring musical environments with the guitar has always been important to him. This creative impulse came into focus through conversations with renowned light artist James Turrell at the University of Delaware, when Byrd was a student there and assisting Turrell with building his "Jida" installation. A chance meeting with guitar icon John Fahey was another transformative experience. Fahey, who happened to be shopping in the same record store as Byrd, bought an early demo copy of Byrd's first album as it played over the sound system. The encouragement Fahey o ered during that humbling encounter has had lasting resonance.

GREG HALL & THE BARNHOUSE BAND

Sunday August 21st
11am-1pm
Arabica on Commercial

Somewhere between the classic country tradition of Johnny Cash, and the modern breed of singer-songwriters like Josh Ritter, lies Greg Hall & The Barnhouse Band. Their debut, Railroad Song EP shows their mix of exciting instrumentation and thoughtful songwriting. The Barnhouse Band was formed in the recording sessions for what was then going to be a solo album of band leader Greg Hall. As friends started to add pieces to the record it started to become clear that this music was meant for a full band. Greg Hall & The Barnhouse Band is currently working on a full length record, due out in early 2016. This record is going to solidify the sound as a band playing folk/alt-country music, instead of the once desired singer-songwriter sound that they started with.

Born and raised in the small town of Hermitage, Pennsylvannia he started honing his skills right out of the gate. "I've been in and around music my entire life" says Mike. "From as young as I can remember, my siblings and myself were taking piano lessons and performing at recitals. We were also part of a local chorus group that performed a big concert once a year. On top of all that, I can still remember standing next to my dad in the church choir belting out the songs as loud as I could."
